Nordic Rowing: Our Unforgettable Adventure in Sweden’s Stockholm Archipelago

The Stockholm Archipelago, with its labyrinthine waterways and picturesque islets, proved to be the ideal canvas for our first ever trip in Scandinavia with our Sweden rowing adventure in June 2023. As we dipped our oars into the crystal-clear waters, we embarked on an adventure that blended the wilderness exploration with city outings, all in wonderful company.

Join us as we relive the memories and share the captivating moments captured through the lenses of four different perspectives – the tour leader, two of the guests and the two guides who were instrumental in creating these experiences.

That was great!

Trip well organized- I’m sure there was lots of work that went into planning everything, especially the rowing aspects. Equipment, accommodations, route food were all well thought out and went very smoothly.

Guides

Anna and Madeleine were calm and knowledgeable guides. … I was uncertain at first but I came to trust them completely coxing, guiding between islands, landing, launching.

Anna captured and shared a lot of nature shots, and we could not be happier – Sweden is well worth it!

Guides were aware of safe routes to take, watching out for ferries and taking wakes bow-on. Appreciate guides care and attention regarding waiting out a storm, and rowing hard to out-run another, also contingency landing plans.

Tour leader

Creating and leading a tour in Sweden has been in my mind for several years.. I was delighted to see the idea come to life, and thrilled by how wonderful it all was. I was intrigued by the possibilities of a country at once very familiar with similar landscapes to my home in Canada but also exotic, with it distinctive culture, history and heritage. The Stockholm Archipelago was like the Canadian Shield with red houses. Stockholm was fantastic. It is a very approachable city, easy to walk in or move around by ferry, bus, train or tram. The varied neighbourhoods offered fascinating architecture, lots of great cafes and restaurants, always within a short walk of water. One of my favourite places in the City Hall, celebrating 100 years this year.

That was the just the setting. The tour, worked out over months of planning with Anna and Madeleine, was grand. Lots of great coastal rowing (I so so love those waves!), balanced with some cultural visits and excellent food! I was very happy that the varied accommodations were as good as I had hoped: a modern hotel to start in Lidingö, a classic hotel in Vaxholm, the resort feel of car-free Grinda and a modern hotel fitted into a historic building in Gama Stan, the historic heart of Stockholm.

The greatest compliment that I can pay to our guides Anna and Madeleine and to our wonderful guests, was that I felt as if I were on holiday too. Thank you very much!

What an experience this was!

We are hoping that this photos from our trip inspire you to embark on your own adventures and discover the magic that lies beyond familiar waters.

Looking forward to more Scandinavian tours and the wonders they hold. Until then, the Stockholm Archipelago will remain a cherished chapter in our book of unforgettable rowing journeys.
