Rowing in British Columbia: An Authentic Wilderness Rowing Adventure

Imagine a place where wilderness stretches as far as the eye can see. Broken Islands Lodge with water-access only in Barkley Sound, looks out at the Broken Group Islands of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. It is a perfect spot for a rowing adventure and for a retreat from the daily grind. This is one of our most popular trips, and in 2023 it once again sold out.

This August the weather was wonderful. Our coastal boats navigated serene waters and and a few challenging waves as well. All part of the adventure. Did we mention the regular visits by black bears along the shore looking for crabs?

This rowing adventure would never be possible without our wonderful guides. Our guests loved Julien, Sam and Michelle, and of course so do we.

Guides – Great people, I can’t think of how they could have done better.

Can not say enough good things about all the guides. This is hard work and long days. All three were a pleasure to have for the week.

Very well organised without being dictatorial. Meetings before each row ensured everyone knew what was planned. Timings were clear and crews put together so all were able to try different boats/positions as well as coxing. Had complete confidence in guides who led us out safely and allowed us to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

The lodge’s staff embodies warmth and hospitality, making you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. It is both rustic and charming, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, being completely off the grid.

..a single lodge in the most wilderness of destinations. Well organized by the very capable, friendly and available staff.

The food was generous and good, and the staff very accommodating with special needs/requests.

Plentiful, hearty and delicious food with staff ensuring anyone with dietary needs was catered for.

Of course, none of our trips would be possible without our guests. This group included repeat guests from our other trips and we were happy to welcome those on their first rowing adventure with us. Guests hailed from Canada, USA, France and Wales. We love these international groups!

The people who row are interesting people. This makes going on a trip a joy.

Rowers are reliably terrific people! Great fun to meet a group from different places.
